Wanted to give an update that The Prepared has created a Discord server for those who want to join in on some conversations over there.

Thanks for asking. We’ve thought about it for a long time, because I agree synch and asynch convos have different purposes. (That’s part of why we participate in some non-TP Facebook groups, for example.)
We have a community slack channel you and anyone else here is welcome to join. It’s mostly the few of us who work on TP internally + a few core community members like ‘Rich in DC’ and Jonnie.
Since it’s small, right now it’s more of a place we all drop links we find, such as current events, then sometimes convos spin off from those. But would be happy to see it morph into more convos.
No Discord yet, but would be more than happy to host one.
Anyone want to join the Slack? Is there a general preference between Slack and Discord?

Let me know when y’all decide to speak English.

Let me translate for you Redneck, and don’t worry I wasn’t involved in either of these two services before joining The Prepared and it’s relatively new for me as well.
Slack and Discord are can be overly simplified as online services that allow instant messaging, voice, and video calling. They are popular platforms for employees working at home or even in an office to quickly message each other and collaborate. Many people will create these groups on these as well to talk with other people about their hobbies such as those into ham radio or video games.
In the context that John is talking about, you would create a Slack or Discord account according to which one or both we decide to work on, and then you can go in there and share prepping related news articles and stories, ask questions, and have conversations in near real time with people.
Some people like the quicker instant messaging ability over something like a forum, and others prefer a forum over instant messaging.

Thanks. I prefer a forum with private messaging. Is that not possible here?

Gideon ParkerStaff - July 16, 2021
Private messaging is not currently available but has been discussed and may be a future addition. Thank you for letting us know you are interested in it.

I’d def be keen to join the Slack! I prefer Slack to Discord, because AFAIK discord has no threading, which I think makes it a lot harder to manage.
Facebook groups aren’t secure (heck, neither is Slack nor Discord) but I think that’s the superior communication medium because the post/comment/subcomment structure makes it easiest to not get buried under notifications. I think the TP forum basically does this just as well though!

I’d vote for Slack as I have yet to embrace Discord although I have an account. I use Slack at work and have some familiarity.

I would be interested in joining one or the other or both. The platforms are new to me, though I’ve heard of them.

I just sent Slack invites to e.blake, Lowell, Alicia, and Seasons4. Sent to the email addresses registered to your TP accounts — send us a note to hello@tp if you’d rather use another email address for Slack.
Happy to add anyone else, too!

I’ve never used Slack but I use Discord all the time. If you decide to add a Discord server, I’ll join that.

This forum is heavily moderated to keep things valuable to as many people as possible. Full community policies are here. The basics:
- 1. Be nice to each other.
- 2. Stay focused on prepping.
- 3. Avoid politics, religion, and other arguments.
- 4. No unfounded conspiracies, fake news, etc.
- 5. Debate ideas, not people.
